CGCL Host Spelling Bee Competition in the La Brea Community.

On Monday 17 March 2025, the Corporate Affairs Department of Caribbean Gas Chemical Limited (CGCL) hosted a Spelling Bee Competition at the Sobo Community Centre in La Brea. The event featured participation from students enrolled in CGCL’s two Learning Support Centres (LSC), established with the La Brea Association for Innovation (LBAFI). Attendance at the event included CGCL representatives, LBAFI members, teachers, parents, and fellow students who came to cheer on the young competitors.

In the lead-up to the event, students engaged in preliminary rounds at their respective LSCs. From these sessions, eight finalists (four from each centre) were chosen to showcase their spelling prowess on the day. What followed was an intense and impressive competition, with finalists spelling their way through 14 challenging rounds, ultimately exhausting the full list of pre-provided S.E.A. words.

Emerging victorious after a gripping contest were Sion Gachette, representing the Sobo Community Centre LSC, and Kimaley Matthew, representing the Police Youth Club LSC. Their performance was a testament to hard work, preparation, and poise under pressure. The enthusiasm demonstrated by all the students was nothing short of inspiring. Each participant stood with confidence, tackling each word with determination much to the delight of those in attendance.

This initiative aligns to CGCL’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Education Pillar which focuses on empowering people through education. The event also served to support students preparing for the Secondary School Assessment examination in the areas of English Language, Grammar and Creative Writing.
