CGCL partners with the SURE Foundation for Tree Planting & Beautification of the La Brea Pitch Lake, Visitor Centre

Mr. Nakaba Aoyagi and several employees of Caribbean Gas Chemical Limited (CGCL), joined members of the Sustainable Unemployment Reduction Efforts (SURE) Foundation and other stakeholders in a tree planting and beautification initiative, at the La Brea Pitch Lake, Visitor Centre on February 16th, 2020.  The primary purpose of the engagement was to help restore some of the natural vegetation to the site and beautify the world-famous national treasure.

Other stakeholders present at the exercise included: representatives of the Siparia Regional Corporation, the Member of Parliament for La Brea, the youth arm of the Rotary Clubs of Pointe-a-Pierre and Point Fortin, the US Embassy’s Public Affairs Unit and volunteers and students of Naparima College, Naparima Girls High School, Presentation College, San Fernando and Vessigny Secondary School and the No Youth Left Behind Youth Group.  Over 300 trees were planted at the Visitor Centre’s Grounds and on the periphery of the facility.

Mr, Aoyagi expressed his gratitude to the management, staff and their families for taking the time to assist with this important exercise and for doing their part towards the continued sustainable development of their host community.

“CGCL is committed to ‘Responsible Care’, which is a core value of our organisation.  This initiative presented an opportunity for us to participate in the protection and preservation of our environment and demonstrate our commitment to reducing the community’s/country’s carbon footprint, said Aoyagi.”

The Pitch Lake is home to varying species of butterflies and birds including the hummingbird. Tree planting at the Pitch Lake and its Visitor Centre is expected to attract more heterogeneous species of birds, butterflies and other fauna.
