CGCL is committed to the sustainable development of La Brea, our fenceline community. We believe that education and the investment in human capital can be one of the main drivers to long-term community transformation.
Under our Corporate Social Responsibility Pillar of Education, CGCL committed TT$2 million over a five-year period for scholarships and bursaries to The University of the West Indies (The UWI) students from our fenceline community. Our scholarship and bursaries will aid students’ development, help unlock additional opportunities for their future advancement and have a positive impact on families and the community.
CGCL and The UWI signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) and formalised a commitment between The UWI and CGCL for the academic years 2019-2024. Over the five-year period, 50 bursaries valued at TT$5,000 each will be awarded and 30 continuous scholarships valued at TT$20,000 each will support programmes and research across eight faculties at The UWI. The awards are based on academic merit, financial need and/or extra-curricular activities or any combination of the foregoing..
For the 2019/2020 academic year, CGCL awarded 15 total awards to freshmen and continuing students from the La Brea community -seven freshmen students were awarded three-year scholarships; and eight continuing students were awarded one-off bursaries. To date, nine awardees have graduated from The UWI with a grade point average of 3.0 and above in the following areas of study:
- Medicine
- Psychology
- Biomedical Technology
- Engineering
- Law
Sponsorship and Donations
As we continue to support the nation through our methanol production, we also provide support for those in need.
Our philosophy on sponsorship and donations places emphasis on helping communities – fenceline as well as general – that will also contribute to nation building. These efforts may not be elaborate, but the significance of intent will be sufficient for consideration.
Our giving back is a meaningful action, with purposeful investment that either celebrates Trinidad and Tobago or makes our country a better place to live in.
