CGCL Host Third Annual Spelling Bee Competition

Primary school students from across the La Brea community put their spelling skills to the test at Caribbean Gas Chemical Limited’s (CGCL) 3rd Annual Spelling Bee Competition, held on October 22, 2026, at the La Brea Community Centre. The event brought together ten finalists, from five participating schools (Guapo Government Primary School, La Brea R.C. Primary School, Rousillac Hindu Primary School, Rousillac Presbyterian Primary School, and Vance River R.C. Primary School) head-to-head, to compete for the coveted 2026 Spelling B Championship Trophy. In attendance were representatives from the Member of Parliament for La Brea’s Office, Teachers, Principals, Parents, and Students from CGCL’s two Learning Support Centres.

CGCL’s Corporate Affairs Manager welcomed guests and took the occasion to explain the rules and format of the competition, before assuming her role as Chief Judge. The competition kicked off with an initial two rounds, which allowed participants to find their footing, with zero eliminations. However, the contest intensified from the third round onward, as participants faced increasingly challenging words, which kept onlookers on the edge of their seats. Students exhausted the initial word list, protracting the event with the introduction of a supplemental word list not previously seen by any of the participating schools.  In the end it was Alexandra Seifert of the Rousillac Presbyterian Primary School and Stephon Persad of Rousillac Hindu Primary School, who went toe-to-toe, chasing victory.   Alas, Ms. Seifert emerged as the CGCL Spelling Bee Champion, claiming the coveted championship trophy.  Mr. Persad received a 2nd place trophy and places 3rd to 5th received specially designed medals.  All finalists received signed certificates of participation.

The competition results were as follows:

  • First Place: Alexandra Seifert, Rousillac Presbyterian Primary School
  • Second Place: Stephon Persad, Rousillac Hindu Primary School
  • Third Place: Vikash Sankar, Rousillac Hindu Primary School
  • Fourth Place: Ethan Henry, Vance River RC Primary School
  • Fifth Place: Katrina Sookhram, Rousillac Presbyterian Primary School

The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mrs. Josann Mulchansingh Christopher, Corporate Communications and Social Investment Administrator at CGCL.

CGCL extends sincere thanks to the participating Schools, Judges, Parents, and Teachers whose contributions and involvement helped to make the competition a resounding success. Through initiatives such as this, CGCL continues to champion education as a vehicle to transport young people within the La Brea Community towards a brighter future.
